Welcome to Jesmond Old Cemetery, one of Newcastle's oldest and finest cemeteries
This little known gem is home to many of the Victorian men and women whom made the City of Newcastle what it is today. Fenwick, Bainbridge, Dobson, Armstrong, Deuchar, Hancock, Dove, Pumphrey to list but a few . . . all famous names, all instantly recognisable to anyone from the North East and many known to those from further afield. Inventors, retailers, engineers, architects and songwriters are examples of the variety of professions and livelihoods represented and remembered within the walls of Jesmond Old Cemetery. A veritable cross section of local, national and international social history.
Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, Jesmond Old Cemetery has become somewhat neglected and overgrown, leading to many of the memorials becoming unrecognisable, unreachable and in a state of disrepair. Having been moved by this sad state of affairs that so besmirches the memory of such famous and influential figures, the Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery was formed in May 2008; a voluntary organisation whose main aim is to bring the Cemetery back to something like its former glory. Crucially, in setting up the group, we have gained the full support of the City Council, particularly from staff from the Bereavement Services Office. Additionally, a number of local businesses have provided funds to help finance our organisation and, without their generous donations and support, we would not be in the healthy position we are in today.
The Friends of Jesmond Old Cemetery are dedicated to promoting the restoration, conservation and respectful enjoyment of the Cemetery, including its monuments, buildings, green spaces, wildlife and the overall environment. One way of helping us promote our aim is this website, which is dedicated to providing you with information on the history of the cemetery and its famous residents, update you on news of our ongoing plans and projects, and hopefully, inspire you to get involved in whatever way you can.
